Clare Duffy to be IASH/Traverse Creative Fellow 2014-15

The Traverse Theatre and IASH  are pleased to announce that this year’s IASH/Traverse Creative Fellow is the professional playwright and director, Clare Duffy.

As part of the Fellowship, Clare will be commissioned to write a new play for the Traverse Theatre on the topic of ‘Conflict and Reconciliation’.

On hearing the news, Clare Duffy said: “It’s an honour to receive the IASH Creative Fellowship and see my name alongside such acclaimed playwrights. Under the theme of ‘Conflict and Reconciliation’, I’m particularly interested in current political forces gathering in the Arctic over oil and the natural environment. This situation presents a number of paradoxes in the teamwork between the activists and the military presence and also the individuals that make up each team, working together in such extreme conditions.”

Currently Artist In Residence at Summerhall Arts Centre in Edinburgh and Associate Playwright at Playwrights’ Studio Scotland, Clare Duffy won the Pearson Award in 2003 for her first full-length play, Crossings (**** The Scotsman) which was subsequently published and toured the UK in 2005. Most recently in 2013 Clare wrote and directed Money: The Game Show, a co-production between Unlimited Theatre and The Bush. Described as ‘clever and remarkably understandable’ and ‘ingenious’ by The New York Times, Money: The Game Show will tour in May 2014 including dates at the Traverse Theatre on 23-24 May.

Running since 2003, the annual IASH Creative Fellowship enables a local writer, composer or director to develop their art and push the boundaries to new levels of creative achievement. Previous IASH-Traverse Creative Fellows include Jo Clifford, Linda McLean and Iain Finlay McLeod.

Professor Jolyon Mitchell, IASH Academic Director, said: “IASH is delighted to continue its partnership with the Traverse Theatre and is very much looking forward to welcoming Clare Duffy as the next IASH-Traverse Creative Fellow in 2014-15.”

The Fellowship will start in September 2014 and run for nine months.
