Clothing Canada: Unboxing stories behind clothing made in/for Canada

In this work-in-progress seminar, I will be discussing my digital archival project: Clothing CanadaDrawing on my PhD research, which examined the 2013 Rana Plaza building collapse in Bangladesh, I share Canada’s complicity in the disaster, which killed more than 1,100 garment workers. While Canada may not be known for its fashion prowess, it has a history of international diplomacy and a reputation of supporting human security on the international stage. The Clothing Canadadigital archive aims to map tensions and flag discrepancies between the stories Canada tells about itself and the realities of making clothes in/for Canada. These discussions are especially timely in the wake of Trump tariffs, as Canada experiences a rise in consumer ethnocentrism and nationalist commodity activism under the guise of a “Made in Canada” brand designed to reinforce so-called “Canadian values.”
